Who make up Communicating Hands?
The majority of the team are pre-lingual Deaf, meaning they were born Deaf or contracted
an illness such as meningitis, like three in our team did when only a few months
old. Most of the Deaf were born to hearing parents. However, one member has parents
that are both Deaf as well as siblings that are Deaf and therefore comes from a
whole family of native BSL users. In fact, all of our Deaf members are highly efficient,
skilled native users of BSL.
The hearing members of the team that work behind the scenes are also highly trained
having completed courses and obtained high qualifications, up to Post Graduate level,
for interpreting of English/BSL. They all have immediate family members that were
born Deaf who are native BSL users. Members of the team, both hearing and Deaf,
have teaching qualifications and have taught or are currently teaching BSL at approved
colleges today.
All in the team that make up Communicating Hands are enthusiastic about Sign Language
and want people to know and enjoy this beautiful expressive language. They are also
passionate about the quality of teaching and aim to provide the very best. For those
that would like to take their learning of BSL beyond this on line course, we aim
to provide BSL workshops. These workshops will be fun days full of a variety of
BSL activities. Working directly with the Deaf tutors will enhance your learning
of the language.
